About Me
Sarah Hucal is a freelance multimedia journalist and news producer based in Berlin. After starting her journalism career in New York City more than a decade ago, the native Michigander relocated to Berlin and has since covered a wide range of topics — from human trafficking in Thailand, digital privacy in Germany, the tourism industry in Greece, interior design and architecture in Italy and Lebanon (to name a few!).
She has contributed to Politico Europe, ABC News, The Guardian, Al Jazeera English, US News and World Report, DW (Deutsche Welle), Curbed, Time out New York, The Miami Herald, the Bangkok Post, the New York Observer, and Mongabay conservation news, among other publications.
Since 2016, Sarah has worked as the Germany & Austria reporter and producer for ABC News, producing segments for World News Tonight and Good Morning America, among other programs. She also works as a video journalist and content creator for the travel and lifestyle departments of the international broadcaster DW (Deutsche Welle), producing, shooting and editing travel segments, including long-form YouTube documentaries for DW Travel with herself as on-camera presenter.
In recent years, her interest in reporting on migration has taken her to Colombia and Spain, as well as Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City, where she was a 2019 fellow in the Dart Center global reporting institute, "Reporting on Refugees and Migration Through the Eyes of Young Children." And the recipient of a reporting stipend to cover Venezuelan migration to Colombia.
Sarah also works as a voice-over artist for long and short-form documentaries and news programs on DW. Sarah is also a content creator on Instagram where she produces, shoots and edits reels for the Instagram accounts of DW Travel and Euromaxx.
Sarah received an M.A. in Global Studies from Humboldt University in Berlin. The program focused on the economic, political and cultural aspects of globalization on the global South. Through the program, she spent semesters at FLACSO Argentina in Buenos Aires and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Sarah holds a B.A. in Communications Studies and B.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan.
In her free time, you will find her studying Turkish and Greek traditional folk music and playing the oud on a Greek island somewhere.
